Demonstrators Confront Police Near Milan Olympic Village After Games Begin
On Saturday, roughly 10,000 protesters marched to condemn what they called the “unsustainable” nature of the Games. Toward the end of the march, dozens of participants threw stones and set off fireworks at law enforcement, prompting police to respond with tear gas and a water cannon.
Authorities also reported sabotage of railway infrastructure near Bologna and Pesaro, causing delays to both high-speed and conventional train services. Officials said that cables were damaged along part of the Bologna-Venice line, and an arson attack targeted a rail traction substation on the Ancona-Rimini route. An improvised incendiary device was also reportedly discovered on the tracks.
While no group claimed responsibility, authorities suspect that anarchists may have been behind the attacks.
Transport Minister Matteo Salvini described the events as a “premeditated attack” by those “wishing to harm Italy.” He likened the sabotage to earlier left-wing protests that briefly occupied train stations.
The Olympic flame was lit at Milan’s San Siro Stadium on Friday, marking the start of the Games, which feature nearly 3,000 athletes from over 90 countries.
